Max Verstappen has told the boo brigade to show him some respect as the triple world champion prepares to enter the lion’s den at Sunday’s Mexican Grand Prix rng
Verstappen has beefed up his security for Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez’s home race at the high-altitude Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez venue in Mexico City rng
Verstappen, who was jeered by Perez’s supporters a week ago in Austin, Texas, is prepared for another hostile reception this weekend – and he will be flanked by multiple security guards in the paddock rng
Organisers of the event – which is set to attract a crowd of nearly 400,000 over the three days – have appealed to fans for tolerance by launching the #Racepect initiative rng
Verstappen was jeered by Perez’s travelling fans in Miami earlier this year, while Lewis Hamilton was also booed here last year rng
“The hashtag doesn’t need to suit me,” said Verstappen rng
“It needs to suit the behaviour of the people and it is good to raise awareness because the behaviour of the crowd at some places can be rng better rng
“In Austin, it was against me rng
Supporting your favourite driver is fine, but you also have to respect the competition rng
“It is not only in Formula One, but is a general problem in a lot of rng sports that needs to be looked at and needs to be improved rng
”Perez’s fans remain unhappy Verstappen did not help the Mexican secure second place in last season’s championship after he ignored a team order at the penultimate round in Brazil rng
Perez has won only twice this season – his last victory in Azerbaijan on April 30 – with Verstappen racing to his third title in as many years rng
But the Dutchman added: “The rivalry with Sergio is made up rng
We get on really well rng
As a driver you try to be first or faster, but we have a lot of respect for each other and we appreciate each other’s performances rng
“For me, I feel very safe rng
I have had a great reception so far, and it is good to be back rng
”Red Bull team principal Christian Horner and motorsport advisor Dr Helmut Marko will also be accompanied by security guards rng
Last month, Marko, 80, referred to Perez’s background when discussing his driver’s inconsistent form rng
He said: “Let’s remember that he (Perez) is South American and so he is not as focused as Max Verstappen or Sebastian Vettel was rng
”Marko apologised for the remarks, but Hamilton believes Perez deserves greater support from within Red Bull rng
The seven-time world champion said: “As a driver, I understand the psychological and mental pressures weigh so heavily on you rng
It is difficult to put into words rng
“Sergio has carried himself really well, but I don’t think his team has been massively supportive – one spokesperson in particular has not been really great in helping him rng
“If I heard (Mercedes team principal) Toto (Wolff) talking negatively about me it would be tough rng
It is a difficult environment for him, but he has dealt with it to the best of his ability rng

Reports of the Premier League and broadcasters scheduling the first Christmas Eve fixture since 1995 this season are a “kick in the teeth” for match-going fans, the rng Football Supporters’ Association has said rng
It follows a report in The Telegraphthat at least one fixture could be moved to Sunday December 24 this year rng
The Express and Star then reported that the match rng between Wolves and Chelsea is under consideration for the slot rng
The English top-flight has not staged a match on Christmas Eve since Leeds United played Manchester United in 1995, in a contest that is still remembered for Tony Yeboah’s stunning strike for the hosts in a 3-1 win at Elland Road rng
But a fixture has not been scheduled on the day before Christmas since, with supporters voicing their opposition due to the challenges of matchday travel - particularly for away fans rng
Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday this year, with a full schedule of matches set to be played on Saturday December 23, as well as the traditional rng Boxing Day fixtures on December 26 rng
“Reports suggest the Premier League and broadcasters are set to ignore supporters and schedule a Christmas Eve fixture for the first time since 1995 rng
It’s an unwanted present which no-one asked for,” the rng Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) said rng
“It would be a huge kick in the teeth for supporters who have consistently made clear their opposition to games the day before Christmas – as it’s not the first time this has been proposed rng
“Back in October 2017 there were reports that Sky rng Sports wanted to broadcast games on Christmas Eve which we said represented ‘a new low point in putting the interests of rng football broadcasters over those of matchgoing fans’ rng
“It would put many supporters in an impossible choice rng between going to the match or spending festive time with their families – and that’s before you factor in the added challenges of travelling on a Sunday rng
“In the past decade or so Christmas Eve fell on a Saturday in 2011, 2016 and 2022 while 2017 was a Sunday rng
There was no top-flight rng football on those days which suggests an informal policy the Premier League is now looking to backtrack on rng
”Commenting on the reports that Chelsea fans could face travelling to Wolverhampton on Christmas Eve, Mark Meehan, the chair of the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust, said such a decision would be “totally unacceptable” rng
“During a time when we ought to be helping supporters travel to away fixtures, it’s outrageous that another hurdle could be placed in their way,” Meehan said rng
A statement from the Wolves 1877 Supporters Trust also criticised any change to Christmas Eve rng
“This potential scheduling once again shows a complete lack of consideration and respect for fans, especially Wolves fans who travel from further afield, and of course visiting Chelsea supporters,” the group said rng
“We also feel that this is unfair on club staff, especially those with young children, who will have planned to spend Christmas with their families rng
We urge the Premier League to consider this decision very carefully before making an announcement rng
