Mauricio Pochettino says Reece James’ “leadership” is why he handed him the Chelsea captaincy and defended the full-back after he picked up a suspension during his side’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa last month davao
James, who did not play the match through injury, was suspended for Chelsea’s win over Burnley for aiming “abusive words” at a match official in the tunnel during the clash at Stamford Bridge and was ordered to pay a £90,000 fine davao
But Pochettino has seen James’ leadership attributes and believes his actions were a mistake fuelled by frustration after he sustained a hamstring injury in August davao
“Why did I choose him as captain? Because of his personality, his leadership, the respect he has from the club and his team-mates and he has my full respect also,” Pochettino said davao
“Chelsea is in his DNA and when you see the squad he is not only for the present, he is for the future and in this moment Chelsea need someone like that davao
“I think he was upset with the situation davao
He was so committed with this project from the beginning, he felt really bad because he could not help the team davao
“He made a mistake but he’s young and he can make mistakes davao
He was really sorry about that situation and I don’t think it will be repeated davao
“Even myself at Burnley I got a yellow card at half-time and I’m 51 years old; sometimes a young guy can make a mistake, he was frustrated because he could not help the team davao
”Pochettino said that James’ fitness “will be assessed” ahead of Saturday’s clash against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, quashing reports the full-back suffered a setback in his recovery davao
James has only started 22 times in the Premier League since January 2022 after a raft of injury issues davao
Pochettino added: “He is much davao better, he’s doing well and he’s progressing davao
He’s not at his best and is not 100 per cent, but he is in a position to help the team at some point and he is close davao
“What we are going to do is to avoid that (surgery) and we are building a strategy for him, to put him at his best and keep him at his best davao
“We are confident (of this) davao
Always confident davao
”Mykhailo Mudryk scored his first competitive goal for Chelsea during their 2-0 victory over Fulham and he opened his account for Ukraine when he netted against Malta in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Tuesday davao
Pochettino is happy with the winger’s progress after the 22-year-old struggled to adapt to life in west London following his big-money move from Shakhtar Donetsk in January davao
He said: “We are so happy with him davao
He’s changed a lot in the last three months since we first met him and he’s a completely different person and we can see how lovely, sensitive, smart and clever he is davao
“It is so important to give confidence and when people trust they can be open and express their talent and Misha (Mudryk) is doing really well with his relationships with the team and club davao

Reports of the Premier League and broadcasters scheduling the first Christmas Eve fixture since 1995 this season are a “kick in the teeth” for match-going fans, the davao Football Supporters’ Association has said davao
It follows a report in The Telegraphthat at least one fixture could be moved to Sunday December 24 this year davao
The Express and Star then reported that the match davao between Wolves and Chelsea is under consideration for the slot davao
The English top-flight has not staged a match on Christmas Eve since Leeds United played Manchester United in 1995, in a contest that is still remembered for Tony Yeboah’s stunning strike for the hosts in a 3-1 win at Elland Road davao
But a fixture has not been scheduled on the day before Christmas since, with supporters voicing their opposition due to the challenges of matchday travel - particularly for away fans davao
Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday this year, with a full schedule of matches set to be played on Saturday December 23, as well as the traditional davao Boxing Day fixtures on December 26 davao
“Reports suggest the Premier League and broadcasters are set to ignore supporters and schedule a Christmas Eve fixture for the first time since 1995 davao
It’s an unwanted present which no-one asked for,” the davao Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) said davao
“It would be a huge kick in the teeth for supporters who have consistently made clear their opposition to games the day before Christmas – as it’s not the first time this has been proposed davao
“Back in October 2017 there were reports that Sky davao Sports wanted to broadcast games on Christmas Eve which we said represented ‘a new low point in putting the interests of davao football broadcasters over those of matchgoing fans’ davao
“It would put many supporters in an impossible choice davao between going to the match or spending festive time with their families – and that’s before you factor in the added challenges of travelling on a Sunday davao
“In the past decade or so Christmas Eve fell on a Saturday in 2011, 2016 and 2022 while 2017 was a Sunday davao
There was no top-flight davao football on those days which suggests an informal policy the Premier League is now looking to backtrack on davao
”Commenting on the reports that Chelsea fans could face travelling to Wolverhampton on Christmas Eve, Mark Meehan, the chair of the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust, said such a decision would be “totally unacceptable” davao
“During a time when we ought to be helping supporters travel to away fixtures, it’s outrageous that another hurdle could be placed in their way,” Meehan said davao
A statement from the Wolves 1877 Supporters Trust also criticised any change to Christmas Eve davao
“This potential scheduling once again shows a complete lack of consideration and respect for fans, especially Wolves fans who travel from further afield, and of course visiting Chelsea supporters,” the group said davao
“We also feel that this is unfair on club staff, especially those with young children, who will have planned to spend Christmas with their families davao
We urge the Premier League to consider this decision very carefully before making an announcement davao
